چکیده

Variation propagation in a multi-station manufacturing process (MMP) is described by the theory of ‘‘Stream of Variation.’’ Given that the measurements are obtained via certain sensor distribution scheme, the problem of whether the stream of variation of an MMP is diagnosable is of great interest to both academia and industry. We present a comprehensive study of the diagnosability of MMPs in this paper. It is based on the state space model and is parallel to the concept of observability in control theory. Analogous to the observability matrix and index, the diagnosability matrix and index are first defined and then derived for MMP systems. The result of diagnosability study is applied to the evaluation of sensor distribution strategy. It can also be used as the basis to develop an optimal sensor distribution algorithm. An example of a three-station assembly process with multifixture layouts is presented to illustrate the methodology. @DOI: 10.1115/1.1435645#

Singularity Issues in Fixture Fault Diagnosis for Multi-Station Assembly Processes

This paper presents a method of diagnosing variance components of process error sources in singular manufacturing systems. The singularity problem is studied and the cause examined in the context of fixture error diagnosis in multi-station assembly processes. The singularity problem results in nondiagnosable fixture errors when standard least-squares (LS) estimation methods are used. This paper...

Multi-Objective Lead Time Control in Multistage Assembly Systems (TECHNICAL NOTE)

In this paper we develop a multi-objective model to optimally control the lead time of a multistage assembly system. The multistage assembly system is modeled as an open queueing network, whose service stations represent manufacturing or assembly operations. The arrival processes of the individual parts of the product, which should be assembled to each other in assembly stations, are assumed to...

Fault Diagnosis of Multistage Manufacturing Processes by Using State Space Approach

This paper presents a methodology for diagnostics of fixture failures in multistage manufacturing processes (MMP). The diagnostic methodology is based on the state-space model of the MMP process, which includes part fixturing layout geometry and sensor location. The state space model of the MMP characterizes the propagation of fixture fault variation along the production stream, and is used to ...

Diagnosability Study of Multistage Manufacturing Processes Based on Linear Mixed-Effects Models

Automatic in-process data collection techniques have been widely used in complicated manufacturing processes in recent years. The huge amounts of product measurement data created great opportunity for process monitoring and diagnosis. Given such product quality measurements, this article examines the diagnosability of the process faults in a multistage manufacturing process using a linear mixed...

Variation transmission analysis and diagnosis of multi-operational machining processes

In a Multi-operational Machining Process (MMP), final product variation is an accumulation, or stack-up of variations generated at all the manufacturing operations. In this paper, variation transmission in the MMP is analyzed by relating part variations to operational errors from machine tools, fixtures and datums. At each operation, total part variation is separated into several components cor...
